Nando's Peri Peri chicken, Rio Gaithersburg, MD

Nando's Peri Peri Chicken has grand opening this Wednesday 8/31.  Luckily I'm on the facebook subscription list and I got an invitation for their free mock service.  So we grabbed some friends and went for the free food!

The mock service was awesome!  You can order ANYTHING off their menu including beer & wine, that's totally unheard of.  We were a good bunch so we only ordered....about $54 dollar worth of food between the 3 of us.  But some other table were having wine and beer as well!

Here are couple pictures I stole from Peri Peri facebook page.

The new store location is right on boardwalk with lakefront patio seating.  It is located across from the newly opened 16 handle frozen yogurt store.  The interior decor was gorgeous.  I did not take too many pictures since they have not officially open yet.  But I did take a picture of the wall made with glass bottles since we were seated right against it.  It was really cool looking!

We ordered 2 appetizers.  Garlic bread and pita bread with red pepper dip.  The garlic bread was the better of the two, it was crisp and flavorful!

For individual entrees, we all picked 1/2 peri peri chicken with 2 side orders.  I had the corn on the cob which I absolutely LOVED and also the red skin mashed potato.  Chicken was tasty but I'm a big fan of Peruvian chicken at Sardi's, so I'm going to give preference to Sardi's in this category.  But all the side order items made the grade, including the wild rice my friend ordered (a bit spicy).

The food was satisfactory overall, and the service was prompt.  I especially love the ambiance and can't wait to try the lakefront patio seating with my little pooch (hopefully they allow dogs) on a sunny breezy day!  A completely free meal can't be beat either, so THANK YOU peri peri chicken for picking up the tab :)

Almost forgot, I heard their egg tart (葡式蛋塔) is good, but they ran out when we finished our meal, I'll have to try next time!

SweetGreen, Bethesda MD

We've been to SweetGreen for frozen yogurt before but never tried their salad.  We finally got to try the salad this past Saturday, it was pretty good!  Everything was organic and made fresh, even the utensils are made from organic materials, made my conscious happy.

I ordered the Derby Cobb salad, it was pretty pricey, $11 for the salad.  It was loaded with goodness though, chopped romaine with roasted chicken, blue cheese, egg, bacon, avocado, grape tomatoes; topped with a honey Dijon vinaigrette.  It was yummy!  Needless to say, we finished this one together.

Caesar reggiano salad, on the other hand, was mere ordinary.  It had chopped romaine with roasted chicken, shaved parmigiano reggiano, croutons, toasted parmesan crisp; topped with an organic Caesar dressing.  It was nothing extraordinary but it was not bad either.  It was, simply a Caesar salad...

Both salads were on the pricey side, but they were both freshly tossed and tasted pretty good.  I think I might visit again for the salad and frozen yogurt soon, if budget allows...

Zoës Kitchen, Potomac MD

We visited a casual eatery in Potoamc MD called Zoe's Kitchen. The restaurant features Mediterranean/Greek cuisines and freshly squeezed refreshing Limeades. They also have a newly added wine list as well.

We ordered a couple of items and sat on the outside patio with the pooch. The food came rather quickly and they were all pretty tasty.

He ordered a "GRÜBEN", it is grilled turkey, Swiss, slaw, spicy mustard, on rye bread. The sandwich was tasty and fresh, it had the right balance of meat and lettuce ratio as well. The potato salad was just average though, nothing surprising there.

I actually ordered the spinach wraps but they delivered this instead. This was pretty good! I love the toasted tortilla on the outside and the steak and cheese was yummy.

Zoe's Kitchen had fresh tasting food and descent prices. I don't think I'll make a trip to the restaurant just for the food though, but if I'm in the area, I might pay another visit!

Addie's, Rockville MD

We picked "Addie's" for our anniversary dinner since it's an elegant restaurant and I had a 50% off groupon.  We also took the little pooch of ours so we sat at the patio over looking 355 traffic.  The key was to picture beach side and you'll be okay*wink*!!  The restaurant is built based on a converted single (but large) family home.  It's cozy but fits in the upscale dining category, and the food has always been great!

The waiter was very nice and service was prompt.  We were greeted with menus and special of the day.  We quickly placed our orders and out came complimentary small bread plate!  There were 3 types of bread, one was a banana nut bread, one was regular sour dough, the other one was a dry fruit bread.  I liked the fruity one best!  I liked it so much we asked for a second serving...

For appetizer, we ordered the special soup of the day to share.  It was a vegetable chowder.  It was good but somewhat average, nothing too surprising here.

For the main courses.  I picked the pork chop and of course he ordered the New York strip steak.  Both dishes were good!  The pork chop was the best I've had in a while (since Bear Creek 2010).  It was grilled with perfect grill marks and pink center was just cooked right.

His New York strip steak was excellent.  It was cooked medium rare just as ordered, and accompanied by delicious home made steak sauce.  It reminded me of the steak in the movie 'The Matrix'.  "I don't want to remember anything" as he was chewing the big juicy piece of steak.  Maybe I should take the blue pill if offered....?  Back to the food....the potato fixture that came with the steak was a little bit on the salty side though, I ate one and left the other, just a word of warning.

We definitely loved the place for great ambiance and food.  The price was on the high side so I wouldn't recommend it for everyday casual dining.  For occasional splurge, it should be a wonderful selection!

Red Lobster, Gaithersburg MD - revisited for crabfest

We've been bombarded with the crabfest commerical from red lobster for the last few weeks.  Of course they always advertise it's a 'limited time' deal, so we rushed in on a Monday before our routine Rockville trip to get a taste of crabfest at red lobster.

I've always had good impressions of red lobster because they have good service and the place is close to home.  This time, I had high expectations because their crabfest in commercial looked delicious and I have no resistance to shell fish!  I soon realized, advertisements can be a little misleading sometimes....just a little.

appetizer menu - pretty!

I've always loved their warm buttered complimentary biscuits.  I ate two of these before the salad showed up....  This batch was on the salty side but I still loved them!

The salad was pretty ordinary, but it also came free with the meal.  I finished the salad to make myself feel better on the high cholesterol meal about to come...

salad that came with my $19.99 meal

I ordered the 'snow crab & roasted garlic seafood bake', price was really good at just under $20.  The dish included 1 lb of snow crab legs paired with shrimp and scallops roasted in garlic and white wine.  Served with sweet corn on the cob and red potatoes.  The dish was actually delicious but of course the picture does not match the ones in the commercial.  I had false high hopes for some top quality snow crab clusters and these were just mediocre snow crab clusters that were on the small side.  Nonetheless, the crabs were succulent and the side items were delicious.

same dish in the red lobster commercial - RedLobster.com

He ordered the 'snow crab & crab butter shrimp' for $14.99.  It included 1/2 lb snow crab legs and skewer of wood grilled shrimp topped with crab meat in a creamy crab butter.  He wasn't thrilled about the wild rice pilaf, but other than that the meal was descent.  This dish actually had closer resemblance to the one advertised....

Overall, the food was pretty good for the price.  Our dining bill was only about $37 for 2 crabfest dishes and we were satisfied with both.  The only complaint I had was the food in the commercial looked way too good to be true!  If you're going to try the crabfest dishes at red lobster, make sure you don't have unrealistic high hopes like me for dishes that are all under $20!
